People seek counseling for many reasons in everyday life. Some people pursue treatment for depression or substance abuse or trauma, while few others want help coping with parenting challenges, improving relationships, dealing with major life events or overcoming fears and phobias.
In most parts of the world and more so in India, there has been a stigma in getting help for behavioral and emotional concerns. Many people and families prefer talking to extended family and friends, hoping to find a solution. Therapists have years of specialized training and experience in understanding and treating complex problems. They can recognize behavior or thought patterns objectively and share their observations with a neutral stance. The relationship with a therapist is based on confidentiality and hence there is an opportunity for individuals to be completely honest and open in sharing information without the fear of repercussions.
There are many kinds of therapeutic approaches including cognitive behavioural therapy, exposure therapy, existential therapy, psycho dynamic interventions. Your therapist or counsellor will discuss your issues and suggest the therapeutic approach during your initial assessment meeting. Many times, your therapist may use a blend of approaches to provide the best solution to your issues.
